Distillers By-Products and Cow-Calf Nutrition |
|
Expansion of ethanol plants across the United States will provide by-product feed sources for use in livestock. These by-products are known as distiller’s grains. Currently, most distiller’s grains are being used by dairies and feedlots. However, as ethanol production continues to grow in and around Colorado, these products are likely to become readily available for use in cow-calf programs. This presentation outlines the background of ethanol production and potential ways to include distiller’s grains in cow-calf production systems. This presentation was given by Dr. Jack C. Whittier, Extension Beef Specialist during the Fall Trail Drive cattle producers meeting held on the Eastern Plains of Colorado in late 2006. The Fall Trail Drive was supported by funds from the Colorado Department of Agriculture to provide educational material related to animal premises registration.
